Trinichellu" train journey:
Embark on an authentic and original journey, and let yourself be lulled by the beauty of the landscape!
The little Corsican train, also known as the Trinichellu ("the trembling one" in Corsican, an affectionate nickname due to the fragile frame of the old models) is more than just a means of transport, it's also a tourist attraction. It traverses both the Corsican mountains and the coastline, and its route forms a Y-shape. The line joins Ajaccio to Bastia, and a branch line connects Ponte-Leccia to Calvi via Ile Rousse and the beaches of Balagne.
It's the perfect way to discover a unique vantage point overlooking inaccessible corners. Two routes are a must: the Ajaccio-Corte section, which climbs to an altitude of 900 m, and the beach section between Calvi and Ile-Rousse along the coast.
In practical terms, Corsica's train network covers 232 km and stops at 16 stations. Only the Far South, the Gulf of Porto and the East Coast are not currently served.
It's also used by students from the Corte faculty, who add a cheerful atmosphere in the off-season. Allow around 3h40 for a Calvi-Ajaccio journey and 3h30 for a Bastia-Ajaccio.
Opting for the train is a smart choice, as you'll spend much less than if you rented a car for the day. A journey from Ajaccio to Calvi costs just under €30 at full fare. It's also a good alternative for avoiding traffic jams and parking problems in high season.
