Local inspiration and tips to enjoy à Bastia e dintorni
The history of Bastia: a 100% Corsican identity!
The second largest city in Corsica after Ajaccio, Bastia has a population of around 48,0000. Situated on the east coast of Corsica, this pleasantly dynamic city will satisfy all your desires for culture, history, sports and festive activities. Come and discover the capital of Bagnaja!
Bastia was once just a small fishing village in the port of Cardo (today's Old Port). It was the Genoese who, in the 14th century, built a keep called the Bastia, and walls, well aware of the site's strategic position, both commercial and military. Bastia then became the capital of Corsica. Over the next two centuries, more imposing ramparts were added to the citadel's defensive system, which expanded further in the 18th century with the development of roads.
In the heart of wild Corsica: the most beautiful beaches in and around Bastia
To reach the beach, take the Spassimare : a greenway that stretches from the Toga marina to the Plage de l'Arinella, a beautiful stroll along Bastia's seafront. This large sandy beach boasts a water sports center that organizes a multitude of activities including catamaran, paddle, kayak, windsurfing and towed buoy, as well as a water playground for children.
Join the mythical Ficaghjola cove in the heart of the city, part of Bastia's history.
Further north, the beach of Pietranera awaits you: a small family pebble beach that is little known by tourists, yet very beautiful with its crystal-clear water. If you continue north, you can stop off at Miomo beach and its tower facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, opposite theisland of Elba, visible on a clear day. If you're heading for Lavasina beach, north of Bastia near Brando, don't forget to climb up to the sanctuary. Lavasina, Notre Dame des Grâces, stands on a promontory in the cove of Lavasina. It has become a spiritual Mecca, sometimes called"the Lourdes of Corsica".
To the south of Bastia, the Lido de la Marana, renowned for its long sandy beach, offers a beautiful view of the city of Bastia and Cap Corse. Set in a protected natural site with theEtang de Biguglia in the background, this immense sandy beach stretches along a dune ridge.
Cap Corse, where Corsica reveals its wild, maritime side!
From the 16th century onwards, in contrast to the islanders of central Corsica, who were often shepherds and hunter-gatherers, the Cap Corse experienced a phenomenon of emigration, with its inhabitants leaving their homeland by sea for perilous, far-flung journeys inspired by the American dream. Many of them perished during their journeys, as their boats were often small and fragile. On their return, some of them had made a fortune and, as a token of their success, built large houses in a rather peculiar architectural style called " American Houses ". Others were simple fishermen, making crossings between Corsica and Italy.
The Genoese towers, often located on the seafront, are the symbol of the Corsican Cape Peninsula, their purpose being to prevent Saracen and Barbary invasions. Numerous Marinas (small fishing ports) enrich the heritage of the Capcorsins.
